It’s because of a close connection with my ancestry, my natural creativity, and an understanding of how things work together that led me on the path to design.
I was born and raised on the island of Kaua’i, Hawai’i. Being a native Hawaiian, we lived close to the ground, meaning the outdoors and the environment play a huge role in who I am as a person. Growing up my family and I would go fishing, whether it be with a rod or three-prong spear for reef fish, and go hunting up in the mountains. I would watch my father construct our fishing poles out of natural resources and teach me while floating in the water about how all of us and our environment worked together.
As a mechanic, my father taught me how to problem solve by knowing how a vehicle works and being able to diagnose and pinpoint issues to replace the part that is failing. I learned that when it comes to aesthetics your options are endless as long as you have the means and as long as they don’t hinder the intended performance of the object. I have taken these lessons from my childhood with me as a designer.
Upon meeting my wife and taking a six-month round-the-world trip I found myself back in Hawaii designing, developing, and producing products for the surf/lifestyle brand Aloha Exchange. After four years, many seasons, and multiple product lines, I again found myself outgrowing the island. The time was right to take the leap and take the vast amount of skills I had learned, such as my ability to fully realize the design process, back to Colorado. This included conceptualizing, editing, collaborating, producing tech packs, communicating with manufacturers both overseas and domestically, tracking, marketing, and finally selling the product.
